R.R. 493A (50m) (D.B. 173 25-9-24) J.H.D. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. Expl. No. REF: 4-EAG-11 ENGINE. TAKEN FROM 98-NK CHASSIS - 10,000 MILES. Crankcase top half. O.K. no signs of cracking. 3 cylinder studs loose in case near the 5th. and 6th. cyl. bores. The housing of flywheel on crankcase had a quantity of sandy soil attached to the various webs which had crept through the drain hole in flywheel casing. Crankcase lower half. O.K. no signs of cracking. When the sump cover was removed there was a quantity of loose pieces of white metal - possibly from the connecting rods where the metal had crumbled from the surface of the bearings. Crankshaft. The condition of all journals and crank pins was good (see report of sizes attached). There was the usual deposit of thick burnt oil at extreme end of throw gradually extending towards the oil hole with a possible danger of stopping the oil way to connecting rods. Main bearings. All bearings in excellent condition no broken surfaces. Liners O.K. Caps O.K. Oil feed pipes (7) O.K. Oil pipe through crankcase - the 7th. oiler loose on tube. Connecting rods. Nos. 1, 5 and 6 O.K. Nos. 2 and 3 - surface of metal crumbled. No. 4 badly broken surface, oil hole and groove made up with loose metal and metal broken from liners. Small end bushes O.K. No appreciable wear. Gudgeon pins O.K. No appreciable wear. Oil pipes O.K. Cylinder head. Water test O.K. Nos.1 and 2 exhaust seatings slightly pitted. No.6 inlet guide cracked. This is the cyl. in which the piston broke. Slight oval wear in all guides possibly caused by the action of rocker arms. Carbon deposit not excessive - was cleaned after 5,200 miles. | ||
