Copy to HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} re. SS.{S. Smith} TOOLBOXES. X7580

Thank you for BY/CGH{W Clough}8/N3129.

The toolboxes for 19 and 20-EX., and also for 21/22/
and 23-EX. should be made on the lines of those designed for
EAC. 7. and fitted up in the runningboard as illustrated on
N. sch. 2768. for 14-G-4. We do not wish to introduce
an extra stepiron over and above those already instructed.
We wish the length of the box to be made to accommodate the
existing distance between the stepirons. This will provide
a box having accommodation somewhat comparable with that of
the toolboxes provided by the coachbuilders.

Should the lid{A. J. Lidsey} not become effectively watertight
through warping it will be edged with steel angle underneath
the nickel beading.

We do not wish to make any complete designs of tool-
boxes for these cars for two reasons - (1) R.{Sir Henry Royce} has said that
toolboxes in the steps should not appear on our cars, (2)
when SS.{S. Smith} is standardised and goes into production the toolboxes
will be a feature which the coachbuilders will supply, and
therefore to perfect a toolbox of our own design is not of
great value.
