-cont'd- -2- Brakes. Hydraulic System. Every 1,000 miles, or monthly, the level of the fluid in the tank should be topped up to within 1" of the filler cap. Every 50,000 miles, the master cylinder cups should be examined for scoring or wear, and every 100,000 miles, the wheel cylinder cups should be examined for wear. Lining Wear. Shoe adjustments should be checked every 1,000 miles or monthly. Correct adjustment gives 2,3 or at most 4 clicks on the ratchet when applying the handbrake; and the pedal should not go nearer than 1 1/2" from the floor-boards, when under full pressure. At 10,000 miles, slacken off all shoe adjusters, and if over 24 clicks are required to reach correct adjustment, the brakes should be relined as follows:- Remove wheel. Slacken off shoe adjustment, remove the three countersunk screws in the drum, and with 2-1/2" bolts in the tapped holes, the drums are forced off. In removing the shoes, the links have to be disconnected by removing the pins on the shoes, and for this purpose, it may be necessary to slacken off the nut on the linkage pivot, but the links need not be removed from the car, and their adjustment need never be changed. In refitting the shoes, the pull-off springs should first be replaced. The linings are then bedded-in and the drum and wheel replaced. After relining, the adjustment is made as usual and then slackened off two clicks to allow for the initial swelling of the lining during the first 200 miles. Before replacing the rear drums, it should be ensured that the return springs are doing their work, and that the shoes return to the full extent without help. Servo Adjustment. Fine adjustment allows an initial movement of 1/10" at the pedal to take up the clearance at the friction -cont'd- | ||
