Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}3/MH.{M. Huckerby} OUR REF TS/HTB/EK. 27th. October, 1937. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited, DERBY. For the attention of Mr. N.R. Chandler. Dear Sirs, We have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 26th. instant and note that you have retested the 6 thrust springs returned to you on the occasion of the last visit of our Mr. Armitage and that your latest tests agree with your original readings within ½-lb. This question has been receiving our fullest attention since the matter was originally brought to our notice, and in order to progress the matter further, we would confirm the arrangements made between your Mr. Chandler and our Mr. Armitage per telephone today that you will again despatch to us the thrust springs referred to above, and, at the same time, we shall also appreciate a further set of springs giving your readings, and which are below the limits specified. Referring to the concluding paragraph of your letter we feel that it would be much better if you would arrange for any cover assemblies which you may remove when fitting cars with Thermoid Faced driven plates, to be returned to us so that the thrust springs may be checked and if necessary, new ones inserted, and we shall then be enabled to ensure that same are in balance. Our experience is that when thrust springs are changed, there is a strong possibility of the balance being affected. In conclusion you will recall that when the 10" clutches were originally supplied to you, that same were fitted with stronger thrust springs than are at present utilised. P.S. Since dictating the above, we have made tentative arrangements for our spring suppliers representative to visit your Works jointly with our Mr. Armitage and the Undersigned on Friday next, the 29th. instant.
