Stress-related failures in exhaust pipes and the unreliability of sliding joints.

to its position by the two dowel pins. The lug nearest centre of engine is first broken off and dowel pin is sheared off level with cylinder face. (This happens whether the sliding joint is working or not). The stress is so great between the two ports that it it cracks the exhaust box. This, in every case, is underneath which clearly proves the direction the stress takes place.

Our experience shows that sliding joints on exhaust pipes are unreliable on anything but straight pipes. We either have troubles from rattles, blowing or sticking.
