X9266 BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2/M16.10.30. C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re. P. 2. BONNET. X.7260. X.7830. With the change in coachwork fashions Sales and coach-builders have frequently criticised the fact that our bonnet stops at the chassis frame instead of going down to the depth of the body side. Several coachbuilders, in order to get a continuous body line have carried this out by fitting new side panels to our bonnet. On N. sch. 3154, herewith we show a modified side panel which the coachbuilder can cut to suit the bottom line of the body. It can only be fitted when there is no side wheel carrier. It does not therefore fit in very well with our production system, as chassis are often erected completely prior to allocation, and then side wheel carriers are added at the customer's request. The coachbuilder would then have to cut the extra piece off, leaving the bonnet as now, on each side that the side wheel carrier was fitted. All continental touring chassis could have it as they cannot have side wheel carriers. We do not want this fitted to 27-EX, as we shall not most likely, send the chassis to the coachbuilders, and a standard chassis will be used by them as a model for making the front wings. We suggest that Sales might like to try it on one of their cars which is very bad from this defect - we think especially 3-WJ - with a view to offering it as an extra to coachbuilders who particularly need it, and to put it on all continental touring cars when approved.
