24 The Autocar January 3rd, 1941 SOME QUERIES and REPLIES ADVICE to readers is freely given by The Autocar on all matters relating to cars and motoring. Each week a small selection of these questions and answers is published in this section, those of most general interest being chosen. A large number of other queries receive a direct reply, for which purpose readers are requested to enclose a stamped and addressed envelope at the wartime rate of 2½d.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} for inland letters. INFORMATION SOUGHT Information and advice are sought by various readers regarding the following matters:— No. 13507.—1939 F.W.D. Citroen Twelve “ A.{Mr Adams} B. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}”—Experiences at considerable mileage, with special reference to any transmission troubles. Are petrol and oil consumption figures maintained after the first newness? Any other general remarks. No. 13508.—1938-39 18-80 h.p. Wolseley “ H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} V.{VIENNA}”—Is this a car that will give mileages of the 40,000-50,000 order without serious trouble? Experiences of users at big mileage would be particularly valuable, with special reference to need for reboring. Also petrol and oil m.p.g. No. 13509.—Handbooks Required “ D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} F.{Mr Friese} G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp}”—1937 Standard Nine. “ G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} H.{Arthur M. P.”—1935-1936 Morris Sports Ten Special. “ D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} P. T.”—1931 Wolseley Hornet. READER’S EXPERIENCE No. 13492.—3½-litre Bentley IN reply to your correspondent, “C. W.” (December 6th), I have one of the second hundred 3½-litre Bentleys that were manufactured in Derby. I bought it when it had done about 40,000 miles. Since then I have driven it hard a further 40,000 miles, using it for urgent Government business. I find the car a delight to drive and extremely economical to run. Petrol consumption averages about 19 m.p.g., oil 1,500. The brakes, steering and road holding are better than on any other car I have handled. The general smoothness and absence of fuss when driving hard enable one to cover prodigious distances without personal fatigue. Maximum speed (which I regard as far less important than acceleration, directional stability and stopping power) seems to be in the neighbourhood of 95 m.p.h. under the most favourable English road conditions. The gear change is completely fool-proof and invites constant use. The third speed is practically inaudible at 80,000 miles. The engine has yet to be rebored. The Thrupp and Maberly body I have gives one slightly more room than the standardised saloon, and ample accommodation for four people. I find that the car starts best on S.A.E. 30 oil, and I use an S.A.E. 50 oil in the summer. The makers recommend that an S.A.E. 50 oil should be used if any continuous high-speed running is to be undertaken. Although the tyre pressures officially specified for the front wheels are 35 lb. and for the rear 30 lb., I find that I get better directional stability with the front tyre pressures reduced to 28 lb., but this makes the steering slightly heavier for parking. I know of no better car for the owner-driver of modest means who wishes to cover long distances with the maximum amount of reliability and the minimum amount of fatigue.—“T. C.
