OY-11 x8510 September 10, 1929. TO: Mr. Burton FROM: Mr. Olley. cc Experimental Dept. Mr. Caswell Mr. Beaver Mr. Ainsworth Mr. Humpston Mr. Ross Mr. Roylance Mr. Hives (England) FUEL FEED - SECTION 7140. Mr. Caswell again raises the question of fuel filters, and I sympathise because 213 KR has blocked its low speed jet every few miles - apparently due to a dirty pipe somewhere. Here's how we stand :- England had the Zenith filter over a year ago, mounted on the gravity line from vac. tank to carburetter. It air locked and was then fitted with an air escape pipe reaching up high on the engine. England favor the cleanable feature of the Cuno, have tested it and like it. England have had bowl breakage and are now getting from Enots a special filter with a metal bowl. We tested Zenith and Cuno gravity filters and found the Cuno air-locked badly, but favored its cleanable feature. We then used for a long time several suction type Cuno filters on vac. tank. These were used without gas tank strainer, since the whole of the delicate needle valve system is protected from dirt. We found no interference with rate of fuel feed as compared with present strainer. The only trouble which held us back was slight increased cost and the fact that it was difficult to locate the filter except over the exhaust which did not appear safe. -continued- | ||
