BRAKE DRUM MATERIAL.

Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/Ms. has been making enquiries into the cost of brake drum cast irons other than Millenite. When he has obtained quotations we should be glad to know -

The cost of H.F. 'Millenite'
The cost of ordinary 'Millenite'
The cost of 'Chromidium'
The cost of Coneygre Foundry Iron.
The cost of Forged Steel.

As we cannot experiment with three different kinds of iron, we will select the one that seems likely to be most satisfactory of the cheaper irons, and obtain sufficient supplies of it for test purposes. The Chromidium people seem to have very considerable experience, and would probably be most satisfactory to deal with from a technical point of view.

We have looked into the question of casting ribs in the drums, and it is the very decided opinion of the Works that the extra cost of tools and labour involved in turning such drums would more than counterbalance the saving in material.

Are we right in assuming that the most we shall save is 7/- per cwt.?
