-2- to turn the flywheel round quite easily, the front end of the crankshaft remaining stationary. The car was then put on the rail at Weybridge station. It has not yet arrived at Derby so the extent of the breakage has not yet been ascertained. Other troubles experienced were continual loosening off of the screws holding the valve cover in position and failure of the magneto drive rubber couplings. These are evidently the result of vibrations when on the crankshaft period as they do not occur on the test bed at higher engine speeds than were reached on the track. The slow running of the engine was very poor due to the type of cam form used. Tappet noise was not excessive. NO plug trouble was experienced and the petrol supply was adequate for one and a half laps at full throttle; the car was not run for a longer distance without easing off. The petrol system used was Autovac with an Autopulse pump between the Autovac and the carburetter. The engine was quite smooth up to the point where the crankshaft period became evident. Induction pipe roar was very bad, how much of this was due to the camshaft was not ascertained as no air silencer was fitted to the carburetter. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/A.J.Lidsey. | ||
