CROSS STEERING TUBE BALL END. X8425 X7425

With reference to PN{Mr Northey}'s complaint of ball end seizure - Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}4/T27.11.28 and Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}3/T24.11.28.

Attached is a sketch of the way we propose to overcome the trouble.

We suggest that the holes through the ball should be 1/16 dia. only. The passage to the top of the ball is to ensure that the reservior in the ball shall be filled even if the oil gun is applied when the steering is not in the central position. The object of leaving the hole through the pad to the centre of the ball is to ensure that as long as the space occupied by the spring is full of oil, there will be a head of lubricant running to the ball centre.

The ball must of course be marked so that it is always inserted with the oil holes opposite the pad centre when the steering is in the straight forward position.

We suggest that as the lubrication of the ball can only be better than at present with this scheme, that it should be instructed.

Experimentally we are fitting our cars with it so that it will be well tested before cars reach production test.
