X3806 OY5.R.8.31.28 August 31st, 1928. Mr. B.I. Day, Mr. R.W.H. Bailey, Mr. E.W. Hives, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. Dear Mr. Day: CENTRAL CHASSIS LUBRICATION - SECTION 7141 Parts on Front Axle and Axle Control Shock Absorber. (1) Brake Actuating Shafts in Front Axle. We have already written to you about our occasional failure to lubricate the outer bearing on the brake actuating shaft, due to leakage of oil around the outside of the outer bushing. This leakage does not always occur and in many cases the outer bushing has been well lubricated even after great mileage. Apparently the variation is due to the degree of seal existing on the O.D. and end flange of the bushing and the frequency of using the Bijur pump. In the meantime we have run 10,540 miles with hollow actuating shafts and special inner bushings A-11312 and 3 attached. With the horizontal actuating shafts that we are still using this gives excellent lubrication of both inner and outer bushings, but it would not work of course with the upward sloping shafts now standard at Derby, unless a loose-fitting aluminum rod were inserted in the bore of the shaft to fill up the "void." We have instructed the hollow brake shafts for the next series of chassis. (2) Banjo Drip Plug System. We are going to fit the experimental chassis, MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}-3, with a complete system using the English banjo-type drip plugs, as soon as possible. - continued - | ||
