To ROY {Sir Henry Royce} /GEA. from Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /AJL. X4491 Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /AJL1/LG5.7.28. TANGYE JACK. With reference to the jack left by Mr. Tuck the other day for trial. We have tried this jack and apart from it not meeting our 20 HP. requirements, there is one point about it which prohibits us using a jack of this type - viz: when using the jack under the rear axle (where the jack is a long way from the operator) operation of the handle turns the whole jack round and round rather than extend the screw. This, of course, occurs when trying to screw the jack up to the back axle i.e. when there is no load on the jack. When used under the front axle, it is possible to hold the jack from turning with one hand while operating it with the other. This is not possible of course for the rear axle. We should therefore tell these people that we cannot use this type of jack for the above reason, and ask them to carry on with a double screw lift jack on the same lines as the Michelin 'Forest'.
