Issues with noisy gearboxes on the Phantom II and potential improvements.

(sheet 3) The foregoing I think represents a fairly clear picture of what was generally thought amongst us at the time Phantom III was laid down. I also recall that at one time in the early stages of Phantom II we were in great trouble with noisy gearboxes, and this was attributed by one section of opinion to the gearbox being mounted on the engine. Personally I feel that we have not yet made the best of the present job, and that there is too much stiffness in the coupling shaft joints between the engine and gearbox, the reduction of which would allow us to use a softer mounting for the gearbox, and render the installation less sensitive to errors in alignment.
