RESEARCH MATTERS AND EXE ENGINE.

Notes arising from a meeting in the Board Room on Monday, 15th April 1940.

PRESENT:- Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Rg.{Mr Rowledge} Lp.{Mr Lappin} Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} Gr.{George Ratcliffe} Lr{Mr Ellor}/Lov.{Mr Lovesey} E/TS. (A) SUPERCHARGER RESEARCH AND INTERCOOLER.

MERLIN.

(1) CENTRAL ENTRY BLOWER. Nothing new to report - final R.M.3.S.M. (Merlin XX) scheme/type tested.

(2) 32 BLADED ROTOR - This development is estimated to have the same effect as increasing the gear ratio by 5% - no progress since last meeting due to more important development work monopolising blower rig.

(3) TAIL BEARING OIL CONSUMPTION. Investigation in hand.

(4) USE OF CARBURETTER CHOKE AS AN AIR METER. This suggestion, if proved successful will supply an easy means of measuring engine power when in flight. Should be tried in flight after further test bed investigation.

(5) INTERCOOLER. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} reported that work is in hand to apply an Intercooler scheme to a Merlin Battle instead of to a Whitley, as had previously arranged. Recommended intercooler dimensions have been obtained from the R.A.E.

VULTURE. - LARGER CARBURETTER AND CENTRAL ENTRY BLOWER. The blower performance is now pro rata with Merlin XX - final scheme now running.

GRIFFON. - LARGER DIAMETER ROTOR ETC. Lr{Mr Ellor}/SGH{Sir Stanley Hooker} reported that the use of a larger diameter rotor (9.75") will give an improved blower performance. In order to bring the Griffon into line with the Merlin XX a higher F.S. gear ratio is required. The existing Griffon blower gives the anticipated performance but is not pro rata with Merlin XX - LR{Mr Ellor} anticipates that with mods to the diffuser and intake guide vanes it will be possible to obtain the required increase in performance. Lr{Mr Ellor}/SGH{Sir Stanley Hooker} to concentrate on the development of this blower. The previous suggestion to increase the overall diameter of the blower has been investigated but it necessitates a complete re hash of the engine rear end, and is, therefore, ruled out.

(B) TWO STROKE PETROL INJECTION.

(1) DESIGN POSITION. Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} reported that detail P.T.O.
