We send you herewith two blue prints of DES.302, showing new design of gear teeth for the small planet and sunwheel gears. We have reduced the length of the tooth surface of these two gears, and the number of teeth in the sunwheel from 48 to 36, and the planet pinion from 27 to 20. The centres between the two gears are as at present, and the diametral pitch has been made to suit the modified number of teeth. The shape of the teeth has been based on a 7/9 Fellows stub. The gear ratio with this combination of gear now becomes .597/1 instead of .600/1 as previously. The stresses and calculations for these teeth are all clearly shown on the scheme. Will you please have these gears detailed and instruct two experimental sets as quickly as possible. This scheme has been approved by R.{Sir Henry Royce} Rg{Mr Rowledge}/SFP.
