Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GR.{George Ratcliffe}2/JAB. 6 & 8.2.39. DAILY REPORT. Paulin Bentley II.- B-27-LE. Weather conditions. Thick fog and freezing, impossible for track work at Montlhéry. Engine stripped for inspection. Cylinder block removed and pistons taken off for crack testing in chalk. These were found satisfactory. Radiator found leaking at top stay. Taken off chassis and repaired with strengthening plate for stay. Pressure valve fitted to reduce loss of water. Air scoops made and fitted to each side of engine in an effort to cool the top half crankcase. These scoops direct the air that passes either side of the radiator block on to the engine. Engine oil inspected and found O.K. Pistons cleaned, replaced and cylinder block re-assembled. Corrujoint nickle gasket .030" fitted with cylinder head. Oil thermometer checked and found correct to within 2°c. Engine run light and cylinder head tightened. Tappet clearances re-set at .008" both inlet and exhaust. Ignition and spark plugs inspected, O.K. Rear wheel driving dogs inspected and new ones fitted. Engine refilled with fresh Castrol "XXL" oil. Cold air intake re-assembled for test on track in conjunction with oil temperature tests. Replica made of intake entrance and placed at side of radiator approx. I" in front of radiator matrix. Strap steel stays made for use on Montlhéry to secure cowling when the undershield is taken off for oil temperature test. Petrol filter at rear of chassis cleaned and replaced, O.K.
