Ph.III. TIMING GEARS.

Owing to the large amount of wear which occurs on the Fabroil idler gear of Ph.III. we wish to commence what will probably be a long series of rig tests on Ph.III. timing gears to find the best make of gear blank.

For this purpose we propose to work in conjunction with Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.'s corrosion and water pump tests in the Tomb, and to use the same rig, but with modifications and additions to reproduce engine conditions for the timing gears.

The following is the specification to which we want the rig modified:-

(1) Special straight shaft in place of crankshaft supported in Nos.1. and 7 main bearings with driving flange at rear end and nose to take spring drive and crankpinion at front end.

(2) The following standard parts fitted:-

Timing gears, wheelcase cover, sump, oil pumps and drive, camshaft, tappets, push rods, rocker covers, tappet covers, oil cooler coupled up for purpose of heating oil, oil feed from pump to rocker gear and Nos.1 and 7 main bearings.

The idler gear should not be dowelled into position as we shall probably change this gear a number of times as the tests proceed.

Will you please detail and make the special shaft as soon as possible as the tests are now urgent owing to our being committed to the Fabroil type of gear on Wraith and Bentley III. as well as Ph.III. The rig will be available for modification in approximately two weeks time.

Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}
