COPY. REPORT ON MILLENITE CAST IRON BARS. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. Total Carbon ......... 3.24% Combined ............. 0.80% Silicon .............. 1.97% Sulphur .............. 0.069% Phosphorus ........... 0.065% Manganese ............ 1.09% Chromium ............. 0.21% Nickel ............... 0.36% MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. (Test pieces turned to standard B.E.S.A. dimensions .564" on Gauge Length Diameter.) Test Piece No. 1. 2. Yield Stress tons/sq." 23.1 20.9 Ultimate 25.2 24.6 Brinell hardness 258 248 Appearance of Fractures Very fine structure, free from blowholes and other similar defects. Micro Structure. The matrix is pearlitic, partly lamellar and partly sorbitic. The graphite plates are comparatively small and evenly distributed, and as outlined by the high phosphorus parts, the grain size is exceptionally small. REMARKS. In view of the small percentage of Nickel and Chromium, Millenite may be classed as an alloy cast iron. Its tensile strength is remarkably good, and approximately 10 tons/sq." higher than might be expected by the chemical composition. The structure is that usually associated with good wearing properties. | ||
