Dear Sirs,

40/50 h.p. Chassis - Lighting & Starting Battery 6-RR-5-1. Your Specification 301.

We are in receipt of your letter reference Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 7/NJ5525 of the 5th instant, again raising the question of the most suitable type of cell to cell connection for your starter batteries. This matter has been thrashed out between us from time to time.

We have always regarded-burned up connections as having several definite advantages over bolted connections, and in the bulk of starting and lighting batteries, burned-up connections are standard. At the same time, bolted connections have several definite advantages over burned-up connections. We will very briefly revise the pros and cons.

Burned-up connections retain their 100% efficiency throughout the life of the battery. They are immune from any trouble due to loose or dirty contacts, or to corrosion from acid spray. On the other hand, the lead is liable to crystalise and thereby tend to become brittle; and if the battery is not held securely down, the lead might snap under severe vibration. The conductivity of lead is low compared with copper, and for very heavy starting currents, it may be necessary to reinforce the lead with copper. In event of the break-down of any cell in the battery, the lead connections do not contribute to a ready temporary repair. If an
