GLR-39.

This is a car which is being used by the Inspection Dept. in connection with their work and sales, and as the springing has been criticised, I have endeavoured to find out from St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} what the complaint consists of. He writes as follows :-

"I do not feel that the springs are either too strong or too weak or too flexible. Nor that there is excessive pitching. The objectionable feature that I notice when riding on the back seat is when going over bumpy or wavy roads. This results in one being bounced up with a jerk, followed immediately with a corresponding jerk downwards. The sensation suggests a lack of flexibility and too much damping.

However, I have just tried another car - GOS-1. Percy. Memorandum No. 1484, of which the owner made the same complaint, and although the springing of the car appeared to be exceptionally flexible, yet it was very little, if any, better than GLR-39 in this particular respect. I am therefore feeling very doubtful whether any change of springs will make much difference, and that this particular feature is characteristic of the 20/25."

It is not at all very satisfactory if this view has to be accepted, and that we have to go on running a car which can continue to be the cause of complaint in respect of comfort. A pair of low-rating springs was sent to N. with a view to a change of springs on this car, but we do not wish to go to the expense of this unless it is fairly well indicated that benefit will result. I shall be glad to have any remarks on this matter.
