X4261 Ref. C. to R. {Sir Henry Royce} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} OJ. EN. C. Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hy. {Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Ck. {Mr Clark} STAMP: SEP 19 1922 RECEIVED EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 1/H18.9.22. Re. GOSHAWK WEIGHTS. X4261 X4588 With reference to your BJ17/H15.9.22, referring to Paragraph 8 of R's memo R1/M1.9.22, and also to conversation which I had with Mr. Royce. I am glad to note that this matter is being taken up, as when demonstrating to R. {Sir Henry Royce} the first production chassis, on my last visit to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town, I had to explain this was not very satisfactory for springing, owing to the very strong springs which were fitted. It was necessary for me to bring to R's notice the specification of this car called for a 9½ cwt. body, with a maximum load of 6 passengers (average 3 or 4). Apart from this there is the usual allowance for luggage, which we have regarded on the 40/50 as 1 cwt. I imagine it is on this information that R. {Sir Henry Royce} has requested that the weights imposed should be kept down to a minimum. I should like to point out, however, at this stage, that the specifications of the Goshawk which have so far been sent through, in the case of upright steering cars, are generally the same as the above, or in some cases even more, and in one case I have before me a 10 cwt. body is specified. With the various allowances made for spares, accessories, tools etc. the total weight can be nothing like as low as the requirements specified by R. {Sir Henry Royce} which we understand is 35 cwt. I take it, however, in view of the last paragraph of your memo, that these weights are now being reconsidered, and we shall therefore be glad if we can have the revised specifications quickly in order that the stock of springs for Goshawk cars can be suitably adjusted.
