Gear Lever Rattles.

We have tried N.Sch.4806, in which the outer universal change speed mechanism is locked solid, on B-23-AE. This car has an exceedingly flexible engine mounting, but the gear lever did not rattle under any conditions of over-run or full throttle.

To make sure that this was not due to the engine being unusually smooth, we fitted to the car the old non-isolated mechanism. Rattles were immediately apparent at low speeds full throttle, and at high speeds on the over-run. From this we conclude that isolated change speed mechanism with only one universal joint will be satisfactory.
