This clearance on the average is only about .070"

(2) Gear Lever. There is an irritating noise from the reverse plunger rod on the gear lever at certain speeds - this particular feature gives us a lot of trouble on production chassis, both Phantom II and 20/25HP. I notice also that it was most marked on the Peregrine.

(3) Engine Gears. There is a very marked rattle from the engine gears when picking up in the neighbourhood of 17/20 m.p.h. We are just on the verge of this trouble on Production chassis, but this particular one is much more marked than any we have experienced and it would undoubtedly cause unfavourable comment.

(4) Oil Pump. The Oil Pump is noisy. We have never been very successful in obtaining really quiet oil pump operation on Phantom II Production. Although the introduction of the bottle or reservoir on the input side of the pump, was at the time it was introduced of some benefit, it has not by any means overcome the trouble. If the production of 40/50HP Chassis was larger than it is at present, the obtaining of quiet oil pumps would undoubtedly be a very serious item. As it is, we spend quite a lot of time on quietening oil pumps on chassis on test.

(5) Camshaft Squawk. There is a slight camshaft squawk on this engine. I agree that it is not very noticeable, but I feel I must mention it as this feature exists on practically every 40/50HP Chassis in varying degrees. Some two years ago it was established that it was caused through tortional vibrations of the camshaft, but the fact remains that we have no means of curing it.

6. Valve mechanism. The valve mechanism is not quiet, and there is at least one persistently noisy tappet.

The above was dictated by Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} who, although on holiday, came in for this purpose this morning.
