R.A.E. PETROL PUMP - Geared type.

A R.A.E. petrol pump No.109 was fitted to one of our experimental engines and did not give satisfactory results.

The engine had to be run from 20 to 30 mins. and at a fairly high speed before the pump would function. The pump was required to lift petrol from the ground tank, 8 ft. below, up to the main tank 12 ft. above the level of the pump. The pump was primed several times, but still gave a very poor performance.

Eight more of these pumps were sent to us for testing. This was done on a rig and each pump appeared to be quite satisfactory - the original pump being very poor in comparison.

On the test rig, each pump lifted petrol from a tank 7 ft. below to a tank 9 ft. above the pump level. The speeds are as when on the actual 'Condor'. We give below a table showing the average results compared to the performance of the original pump.

We found that the pumps had to be run rather fast before they started to function, but once petrol was through they could be run quite slowly and would continue to work.

For the following tests the pumps were not primed :-

If this type of pump is going to be fitted to the Direct Drive Condors that have been despatched, we recommend Nos. 110 and 112 pumps, as these gave the best performance on the rig.
