So far the best material they had for wear is "White" iron, but it presents considerable difficulties of course in machining. The only way they managed to use it was to fit a small portion at the top of the bore and finish machine it with the rest of the liner.

Cooling

They have dropped the type of thermostat which has the bellows in direct contact with the water due to deposits forming on the bellows and disturbing the setting of the valve. This item has given them considerable trouble in different parts of the Country and particularly in Kent where they say the water is very hard. They are adopting the type of thermostat in which the bellows are shielded from the water by an outer case which contains the operating fluid.

Equipment

Dennis are using electrical dynamometers and in their opinion Siemens are the best people manufacturing this type, there is however considerable difficulty in obtaining them at the present moment since they are made in Germany. They have electrical dynamometers for their production test beds and they claim that these have paid for themselves in 2 1/2 years.

Conclusion

In conclusion the Dennis people are particularly keen to try our bearings since they hope to go into production with the new engine next year and at the moment appear to have no satisfactory bearings. We agreed to let them have two sets of bearings at cost price, subsequent sets to be handled on a commercial basis. They agreed to this and seem quite willing to pay for the experimental bearings. We promised to let them have these with the least possible delay.
