20-HP. Water Pump Failure. 52-S-3.

We are sending you a pump returned to us from Cricklewood off the above chassis. The pump has failed owing to the rotor stripping its thread where it is attached to the spindle (left hand thread).

We consider the cause of this trouble is due to excessive wear taking place on the end thrust lignum-vitae bush allowing the rotor to catch on the body of the pump developing the above trouble.

We have written Cricklewood pointing out that we consider the trouble is due to faulty fixing of the pump drive, the end play being taken up and the spindle not being allowed to find its floating position. We are asking for further information on this matter.

In the meantime, we shall be glad if this point can be confirmed by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} on Experimental cars, or by Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} on the 10,000 mile production test cars. If so, we should like to have their comments on the matter so that we can reply to Cricklewood accordingly. We feel that otherwise the only action we can take in this matter is to ensure that careful inspection is made to see that the fixing of the coupling is such as to allow the correct floating position of the front pump spindle as explained above.

In the meantime, will SFT{Mr Swift} please give instructions that this point is carefully checked on any further chassis which may be erected.
