Scaled Down Peregrine Steering in Bentley.

3-B-IV is fitted with a Peregrine steering box to N.Sch.3756. On the road the steering is noticeably more spongy than with a standard steering box. We should like however to adopt the Peregrine steering if possible owing to the saving in weight.

We are sending you deflection curves taken on the two boxes; measurements being made at the steering wheel while the bottom end of the pendulum lever was held rigid.

On the Peregrine steering, of the 24º deflection at 500 lbs/ins. torque we have calculated that only 2º is due to the column and nearly all the rest due to twist of the rocking shaft. To increase the diameter of this shaft means a new steering box and bracket. We should be glad if Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} would send us the necessary designs.
