COMPARISON OF SMITH DYNAMOS OPERATING WITH
SMITH CUT-OUTS WITH LUCAS DYNAMOS OPERATING WITH
LUCAS CUT-OUTS.

we have now made a series of careful experiments on the bench on the combined operation of Lucas and Smith dynamos with their respective cut-outs.

For each combination of dynamo and cut-out, the following scheme was adopted -

(a) for the combination in a quite cold condition and with a battery E.M.F. of 12.4

and (b) for the combination in the hottest condition attained after running for some hours, and with a battery E.M.F. of 13.6

Having made the necessary connectionse of dynamo, cut-out, battery and instruments -

(1) The dynamo speed was gradually increased until the cut-out was just operated and at the instant of operation the dynamo volts and speed were noted and recorded.

(2) After the operation of the cut-out the speed was readjusted to the same figure as for (1) and with the cut-out still in the "on" position, the voltage and the amperes to or from the battery were noted.
