To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EH. c. to BJ. c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Ey. X.2925E. EH1/AG15.9.17. EAGLE VALVE GEARS X.2925E. We have been running a set of strengthened valve X.3062. spring washers on the test rig. They are the original design but increased in thickness. We ran a set for 25 hours at 2500 engine revs: without a failure. We consider it is safe to fit these to the engines until the later design is tested. We are sending to Mr. Royce one of the latest spring washers made to LeC.857. We have a set of these now being tested. During the tests we had several of the split pins X.3132. which lock the hardened cap nuts shear off. We are sending a specimen to Mr. Royce which shows that the split pin sheared off the cap nut partly worked off then stripped its thread. We do not feel happy about these cap nuts, we know the endless trouble we had on the first temporary high lift scheme we made because of the split pins shearing. The only way we could get the cap nuts to hold, was to take special care that the cap nut was locked against the spring washer. The specimen we are sending to Mr. Royce had been locked up but must have worked loose. We also found it was an improvement when we increased the base of the cap nut. X.3086 Half of the valves on the test rig had the hardened taper and plugs, these have remained quite tight. There has been a number of production engines made and run with these plugs, there has been no trouble with them Contd. | ||
