TO R.H. from A.J.B. c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} S E C R E T. GOSHANK III - INDIA - 4 SPEED GEAR BOX. At 8.30 last night we wired H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} as follows:- "HAVE CONCLUDED ONE HOUR TEST EACH ON FIRST "AND SECOND SPEED OF INDIA BOX HALF OF TIME BEING AT "MAXIMUM TORQUE. SPLINES WERE THINNED ON SIDES IN "BETWEEN SYMMETRICAL DRIVING PORTIONS AS YOU SUGGESTED. "LOCATING PLUNGER SPRINGS WERE DISCARDED AND ORIGINAL "PULL FACED FORKS WERE FITTED THEREAFTER US APPEAR "TO HAVE GIVEN EXPERIMENT EVERY CHANCE OF FAILURE YET "NO TENDENCY WHATEVER FOR GEAR TO COME OUT HAS BEEN SEEN "THEREFORE CONCLUDE FIRST AND SECOND SPEED OK IF APPEARING "SO ON DISMANTLING DURING NIGHT FULL WRITTEN REPORT IN "MORNING AND COMMENCEMENT OF REVERSE TESTS". The test was carried out with the original pinion as regards number and form of teeth. and every other particular In making the test the gear lever was just pushed into its slot in gate where it remained until the conclusion of the test without the slightest observable tendency to move out into neutral. It might be remarked that the angular position of the change speed lever in relation to the vertical would perhaps have an effect upon the experiment, but it was not considered worth while to take this into account.
