Page 14: sible the “tuning up” of feeds while the job is in production. The stock-feed is unique in that the tube support is mounted on a Fafnir Ball Bearing assembly which permits smooth operation at high speeds by securing excellent spindle balance and relieving the spindle of strains from the “whip” of the stock. In fact, throughout the construction of the machine it will be noted that ball bearings are used on all important rotating shafts. The struggle to reduce friction as near to the vanishing point as is humanly possible, has been a primary object of the Cleveland engineers, to which end they have completely equipped this new Automatic with virtually frictionless, long-wearing Fafnirs. Coincident with the reduction in friction and savings in power effected, is the elimination of heating and wear, and a marked improvement in the quality and production of work. In addition to the spindle mounting, 68 more of these deep-groove, high-capacity Fafnir Bearings (representing eight distinct types) are used to support all intermediate shafts in the transmission and all anti-friction equipped shafts in the main drives. This wide-spread use of various Fafnir series convincingly illustrates the distinct advantage which the “most complete range of types and sizes” can offer to the machine designer who requires a special type of ball bearing to meet the individual application or operating specifications of his particular job. In the gear box the ends of the through shafts are mounted on compact Fafnir Double Row Radial-Thrust Bearings, whose double angular construction makes them ideal to locate the shafts rigidly under one- or two-direction thrust, while the idler or clutch gears are supported by Fafnir Wireloc Type bearings which have a wire ring snapped into a groove cut on the outer surface of the bearing outer ring. This makes a more compact and simplified mounting, because the protruding wire furnishes a shoulder integral to the bearing itself which abuts the face of the gear hub and does away with the need for a special housing shoulder. The cost of the installation is thus reduced, because straight-through machining of the gear housing is permitted. In conclusion, it might also be added that the advantages accruing from the installation of 74 Fafnir Ball Bearings in this new Cleveland Automatic will multiply the longer the machine is in service. Whereas plain bearings usually tend to become more troublesome with age, Fafnirs may be depended upon for faultless service during the life of the machine, providing reasonable care is taken in regard to the important items of lubrication and cleanliness.
