-4- Sketches of the arrangement of supporting tubes and brackets are attached. Strip 13 shows the effect these strengthening stays had on the scuttle and marked the first real progress in the tests. In fact we were never able to improve on these results although we tried the effect of a solid rail tied between the screen pillars, and a still more rigid bracing of the scuttle rail. When strip 13 was taken, we had removed the diagonal stays from the dashboard to the frame and also the dash was free at the base, refitting the diagonals did not make any improvement, and making the dash mounting solid by one fixing (silent block) facing forward also had no adverse effect, see strip14. The triangular stays were now removed fromthe top of the scuttle and still we recorded the same amplitude, see strip 15. Opening the windscreen made a very slight increase of movement, but on re-closing, we got back to our previous figure, see strips 16 and 17. The car was now removed from the bumper rig, and prepared for the road. The car was tested on the road with all the additional stays fitted, i.e., diagonal stays from dash to frame, triangular stays in the top of the scuttle, dashboard held with one silent block mounting facing forward, strengthened scuttle scheme of stays, and roll-bar removed, the result of this test is given in strip 18. We now removed the diagonal stays from the dash to the frame, this was effected without any change in movement, at the same time, we tried a front stabiliser bumper to mark the effect on lamp shake. The stabiliser gave a marked improvement to lamp and wing shake and is well worth fitting to a Coupe, it had no effect on improving our scuttle shake at the stage it was fitted - strip 19. The triangular stays were now removed from the top of the scuttle and the windscreen, which had been tried in a doweled position, made normal, it will be seen that nothing was lost in removing these stays - see strips 20 and 21. -cont'd- | ||
