| COPY OF LETTER. Ref. JJ/AM. 20th June 1924. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of 19th instant (Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/Ms15/DB{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}19624) in which you advise us that you are particularly desirous of obtaining supplies of Hard Grey Fibre similar to the sample which you enclose, which is of American manufacture and known by the name of "Bone Grey Fibre." We are inclined to believe that this material is what is known as "Whalebone Fibre," the special grade of fibre made exclusively by us. This grade is dense, close-grained and horny, and admits of extreme machining. It is made in thicknesses from 1/16" to 1/2" inc., and we feel sure you will find it entirely satisfactory for Friction Washers, for which purpose we understand it is required by you. The price for this grade is the same as for the ordinary grade of fibre, viz:- 1/16" to 1/8"...................1/7d per lb. 3/16" to 7/16"..................1/7½d " " 1/2"...........................1/8½d " " Under separate cover we are enclosing samples in the following thicknesses, each 6" square :- 1/16". 3/32". 2mm & 1/8". and we hope that these will be found sufficient for testing purposes. Should this not be so would you please let us know so that we can send you further and larger samples. We note you mention 1/16" as being the minimum thickness in which this grade is manufactured. We should say that this is the minimum thickness which we have in stock, but we could of course if you are requiring a thinner substance, obtain supplies for you.
