Re Dunlop Wheels.

On removing the wheels for greasing the hubs last night, the ring nut G.2766 came away with the wheel spanner, leaving the wheel on the hub. This was owing to the withdrawal spring ring G.2769 having come out of it's groove in the nut. Further, on attempting to pull the wheel off the hub, the lock ring became wedged against the shoulder formed by the threaded part at the end of the hub, which made it quite impossible to remove the wheel at all, until a couple of thin steel rules had been inserted at the end of the hub so as to raise the withdrawal ring to a concentric position. Reference to arrangement drawing G.6962 will make this quite clear.

We regard this as a serious occurrence, because if it happened on the road in the hands of anyone not familiar with the inside construction of the hub, it would be impossible to remove the wheel.

We have suggested to Ey. that the ends of the withdrawal ring should be radiused off to prevent the risk of their digging in and uncoiling the ring as sometimes happens with a grover washer when the nut is unscrewed.

This is a point worth noting whenever a spring collar is employed against a nut or other rotating part.
