Mr Bailey and I have discussed the matter and are of the opinion that the strenuous test we have made will never be equalled on the road, also that the cooling will be more effective on the road.

We have therefore decided to remove the car from the machine and try it on the road to see if the straps get hot enough to permanently distort. We will try it with the existing straps first and we propose then to fit new straps with rivets flush with the friction surfaces and repeat the road tests. Will Mr Royce please say if he agrees with this.

The distortion of the straps is similar to that which Mr Platford obtained with cast iron liners except that the straps with cast iron liners distort much more quickly than with Ferodo liners. This is one of the reasons why I am persuing the tests with Ferodo in preference to cast iron. Also there is the noise objection to cast iron as well as the difficulty in obtaining metal which will not squeak and will at the same time wear well. The Ferodo is in excellent condition considering the severity of the tests and it is still in good condition for further service.

Brake straps containing more metal are in course of construction and these may reduce the liability to permanent distortion. They are being urged forward.

I should also like to know if Mr Royce will agree to leaving the tests of other brake fabrics such as Thermoid and
