Coverley - Production Engineer}8/MJ.20.7.38. REAR AXLE BEVEL PINIONS. Your memo. dealing with the above, ref: By12/N.15.7.38 has been brought to my notice, and it would appear that some misunderstanding exists with regard to the pinions which are stated to have been manufactured on Production with insufficient length of roller track. The real facts are that a number of pinions GB.2351 were in course of manufacture, when a decision was made to Standardise the double row pinion tail bearing on 'M' Series, and the design was modified accordingly. The pinions, GB.2351 instructed for 'M' Series had, however, been processed too far to convert into the new design, with the result that it was only possible to absorb them by some form of reclamation scheme. The necessity for these conversions did not therefore arise from faulty manufacture, and the conversion scheme was actually of experimental rather than production interest in view of the repeated Service failures of the tail bearing.
