We should like to put forward for your consideration, a suggestion for the improvement of the distribution box. The suggestion is mainly in respect of the method of securing the cover, with the additional feature of opening the cover on a hinge instead of removing it entirely. In place of the present method, we think that some form of snap fastener might be used, fitted on the top side, and the cover hinged on the lower side. The fastener might be of the form of a simple spring blade with a hole in it to accommodate the end of a short stud fixed in the base of the box, or alternatively, a plate in conjunction with a spring-loaded ball. Our reasons for this suggestion are as follows :- (1) It is thought that the present method, using three threaded studs projecting from the base, and three heavy knurled thumb nuts, is rather costly and cumbersome. (2) From experience we find that it is a laborious operation unscrewing and screwing up three nuts in order to look at something inside the box, besides which even now there is some difficulty, when replacing the cover, in locating the studs and the spigot on the base. (3) On removing the cover from the box, a place is usually required to put it and the tendency is to put it down on the running board where it is in danger of being trodden on or knocked off on to the ground. (4) When renewing a fuse or doing some similar job which a driver may have to do, it would be convenient to have the cover projecting from the base in the form of a shelf or pocket. In this could be placed loose fuse carriers, fuse wire, screws etc. which may be temporarily removed. Sketch attached. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Pgt. | ||
