(Sheet 3) Beyond the elastic limit we have to assume:- a stress diagram like "A", corresponding to a force diagram like "B" and a torque diagram like "C". When the shaft is released it goes back elastically so that each layer loses stress proportionate to its distance from centre. So we have a stress diagram after release like "A" and a torque diagram like "C", in which the areas above and below the horizontal are equal. (7) The mathematics of the thing appear to be - If f m = stress at elastic limit f o = theoretical max stress assuming elastic deformation - T = torque. | ||
