BENTLEY V DAMPERS AND PUMP UNIT.

Dampers.

Will you please examine the dampers off 8.B.V. and report on their condition after the 15,000 miles test. Certain pieces failed in France and these we will give you so as to complete the report.

Pump Unit.

It would be advantageous, especially on Silver Wraith, if the pump unit, which replaces the governor unit, had some slight speed effect. It would be convenient if the pump unit gave the following pressures:-

10 m.p.h. 80 m.p.h.

Max. 10 lbs. 20 lbs.
Min. 0 lbs. 10 lbs.

This could be achieved if the ball valve in the pump was changed to a needle valve with a coarse taper. The valve would have to be operated by a lever made of a bi-metal strip, to compensate for the viscosity change in the oil.

The following tests and development would be useful:-

(1) The development of a valve which gave 10 lbs/sq.in. pressure under a certain spring load at the equivalent road speed of 10 m.p.h., and which allowed the pressure to rise to 20 lbs/sq.in. when the discharge through it was increased to correspond to 80 m.p.h.

(2) The development of a bi-metal strip lever pressing direct on the above valve which at any constant discharge keeps the pressure in the pipe lines nearly constant as the circulating oil is warmed up from 0°C to 130°C.
