1269 - To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. to By/Cd. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.8/JH.12.10.38. Wraith Water Pump. As you are aware we have recommended standardisation of a water pump to SCD.861 on C series Wraith chassis and on all B.III chassis. Tests which we have carried out on our water pump rig indicate that this type of pump is much superior to the standard Wraith pump as regards liability to end thrust wear, and a pump of this type is fitted to 8.B.V. car (which has commenced its 15,000 miles test in France) to establish its ultimate reliability. Since we are by no means happy with the standard Wraith water pump (we have had severe end thrust wear both of bush in casing and of thrust plug on certain experimental engines, and the internal design of the Wraith pump is identical with Phantom III which has given similar trouble on some cars in service) we think that if possible this modified pump should be introduced earlier - on B series Wraith if possible, or at least on last 100 in B series. Will By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} please say respectively whether this should and can be done, so that the standardisation sheet can be issued if this is agreed.
