To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. WGR. c. FN. c. Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} X7120. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/AD9.9.32. X7770 PHANTOM II PRODUCTION It has been agreed that the semi-expanding carburetter shall only be fitted to the Continental model Phantom II car. On the standard cars which are not to have the semi-expanding carburetter we ought to retain the present standard camshaft and the 5/1 comp. ratio. The reasons for this are that without the new carburetter the long duration high lift camshaft gives us no better power at high speeds and slightly less torque at low speeds. As regards the 5.25 comp. ratio which is being standardised for Continental cars, this is quite satisfactory with the long duration camshaft but if we use this in conjunction with the standard camshaft we get more detonation at low speeds. Therefore/our recommendations are that the standard car will differ from the Continental car as regards carburetter, camshaft and compression ratio. It will be realised, of course, that when we stick to the old carburetter the controls, starter carburetter and governor will be retained. With regard to the silencer, there is not much advantage except a probable saving in cost, in fitting the resonant type silencer on to the standard car. Of course it would be much better only to make one type if possible but we are waiting for a report from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} on 58-GN to know whether it is considered that the silencer on that car is sufficiently good for all types. It will be appreciated from the above that there will be no increase in performance on the standard car for the next series. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
