(B3) To avoid the noise of the free wheels one supposed they might be immersed in oil, but another way is that the pinion driving the two wheels shall be connected to its shaft by a small plate or other friction clutch put in by foot pressure. The sketch shows the general arrangement of parts.

(B4) It is our intention of trying to work this scheme without the clutch mentioned in (B3) because we believe we can get the one free wheel not generally in use quite silent either by oil or friction control, or use one of the many silent forms of ratchet.

I hope this will interest you, and you will let me know in what order you would like the work to proceed. We are now just on the point of being able to send Derby a design for that part of the work which concerns the front axle.

Concerning the "Swallow", one might imagine that we are also well on with this, being about half way through. Owing to preliminary work done, and that done for "Goshawk II", this chassis ought not to give us much further trouble, but we never really know until one has done the work. For instance, the steering gear has worried us muchly to know what style of operation it shall take.
