81140 To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/MJ.2.9.32. R.R. BONNET FASTENERS. It was arranged yesterday that we should send a Standardisation Sheet through for the cheap type bonnet fasteners as fitted to 19-EX. We know exactly what R's. reply will be to this which will be that the present R.R. bonnet fasteners are very expensive because they are not made in the way that W.W. expected them to be produced. At the same time as we send our report we must justify the present cost of the R.R. bonnet fasteners and explain why they are so expensive and why they cannot be made cheaper. We believe W.W. expected these bonnet fasteners to be made from brass pressings with very little machining and Chromium plated. Actually they were produced from Staybright and machined all over. The bonnet fasteners we have been asked to standardise are Chromium plated. We are certain it will spoil our chances of getting any reduction on bonnet fasteners if we put comparative prices before R.{Sir Henry Royce} which he can point out are foolish. We suggest that the Works Cost examine the bonnet fasteners on 19-EX. and give a price, and also supply suggestions of how we can produce our present fastener at less cost.
