Monsieur Henri Perrot. -2- 9th. June, 1939.

The finest lining we know is Ferodo VG.90. This lining has a low co-efficient of friction (μ = 0.3) and it is necessary to design brakes to take it because of this. The lining is extremely consistent and having no synthetic resin content and very little rubber, does not squeak. Ferodo Ltd. are averse to supplying it because of manufacturing difficulties.

A lining nearly as good as VG.90 is VG.91. This contains some synthetic resin. μ is low, about 0.33. It is consistent but more liable to squeak than VG.90.

We do not think that any brake lining manufacturer ever tests his linings under private car conditions, therefore their graphs etc. are apt to mislead.

Ferodo is, of course, made in France, you can obtain all these linings easily. Sometimes the French lining names differ from the English ones.

Any other information that you would like we will gladly give you if we can, and if you should be over here at any time we shall be happy to see you.

Yours faithfully,
for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.

P.S. We attach a translation of this letter.
