1020 19th May 1937 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}9/AP. Messrs Walker Bros Ltd., Pagefield Iron Works, WIGAN Dear Sirs, We are sending you a further batch of bearing shells for your metalling with N.S.5. material in accordance with the enclosed drawings E.84683/4. There will be 24 bearing halves to metal, 12 off each drawing. The machining can be left entirely to us as was the case in the previous set of bearings you metalled for us. The results we have obtained with the latter are promising although we have not gone very far with our testing of them as yet. What is rather concerning us is a form of corrosion which has started on the metal as can be detected from the enclosed photograph. Can you give us any information regarding this and whether there is any particular type of lubrication oil that should be run in conjunction with this metal as having any bearing on this form of corrosion. ? We understand that the oil temperature should not exceed 270°F.{Mr Friese} and should be pleased if you can give us your experience. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
