TESTS COVERING THE OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS OF

THE B.W.P. VARIABLE LEVEL OIL INTAKE.

--------

The tests hereinafter described and reported on were laid out with the view of determining the characteristics and operations of the B.W.P. device and attempting to determine the influence this design has on the following major phases of internal combustion engine lubrication.

--------

1. Ability to operate without disturbing any water or sediment accumulated in the bottom of the oil sump.

2. Condition of the oil pumped with the B.W.P. suction device in operation while sediment is being accumulated in the sump. This test being laid out to simulate the breaking in of a new engine in the manufacturer's Engine Test department.

3. Ability to maintain oil pressure at extremely low atmospheric temperatures.

4. Tendency toward disturbing water in the bottom of the sump with the B.W.P. device in operation in a car under variable road conditions.

5. Relative temperatures of the oil at various depths from the surface in the sump under actual road conditions.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Oil Sump - - - - - Studebaker President "8"
Oil Pump - - - - - Lycoming H series incorporating their standard screen and suction bell.

Standard B.W.P. Suction Device with special fitting to assemble onto the above mentioned Lycoming Pump.

Pump driven by one quarter horse power electric motor.

Oil was distributed from the oil pump through 1/8 inch holes in dummy oil distribution lines. The oil return
