14. June 1927.

Dear Mr. Coley,
I was very distressed to hear about trouble at Lee's, and that you are not sure what is involved in getting it right.

(1) Above all things we must not fall out with the people, but shew every willingness to keep them from incidental losses.

(2) We must put the job right, and thoroughly, with the least trouble to them. Perhaps they are stopping during the holidays, when you could change the conductors.

(3) You had better send me the design of the part which has given trouble, which are I understand the supply tracks for the current, and the collecting rods, and with it the modifications you propose to make, assuming that Mr. Bentley is in agreement, you being responsible for the mechanical features, and Mr. Bentley for the electrical.

I suggest that one way of doing the job satisfactorily would have been to use continuous current by motor generator. You could if you wished then run with an earth return with a single conductor, as are found so necessary in railway work.

One can understand that if there is any heat generated by the passage of the current or by the contact maker, the expansion of the rods will sure to deflect so thin a rod sideways a very considerable distance.

Regarding the modifications one would think that a 'T' rolled section would be the most hopeful, joints fishplated, with slotted holes, and bonded with copper bonding flexibles.

If you or/and Mr. Bentley would like to come and see me and discuss the matter, or any other matter, I shall be happy to meet you here, or in London next Thursday at the Royce Ltd. London office (Thursday week, 23rd. June.)

Above all things be thorough, and prompt to get rid of such faults. Reputation is even more than money.

Yours faithfully,

(Sgd.) F.H. ROYCE.
