To EY. from RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Cc Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Cc BM/ec. X515 RE BEVEL THRUST BEARING Chassis 10.G.III. is fitted with 10/47 ratio bevels. The pinion bearing Hoff: No.5153, which takes the Thrust, developed rather an excessive amount of end play. When fitted the end play was .003, at the completion of 10,000 miles it was .008. There are no signs of scoring or wear on the race, and on examination it was found one ball had failed. This does not appear to have stood up so well as the New Departure, previously tried. We are sending the bearing herewith in the dismantled condition for your inspection. Do you consider the shell is robust enough to take the thrust loads imposed, without stretching and allowing end play to develop? Bearing referred to has been replaced by a new one of the same type.
