To. H.S. From C.H.H. 85840 Hotel de France, Chateauroux, France. 2/9/31. V3941 re 19.D.2F. We have had a failure of the bijur cane fitted to 19.D.2F. The failure was caused by the cork washer, which is placed at the bottom of the cylinder of the cane, which I presume is for the piston to rest on. The piston had apparently, on its upward stroke, taken the cork washer with it. Apparently the cork washer had fallen off, resting on the stem, which is the oil outlet. The next time the piston came down, it had jammed the cork washer into the hole of the stem, stopping the bijur from working. We are enclosing the cork washer so that you can see exactly what has happened. Re. 42-MS. As there has not been time to receive an answer from you re. this car, we have fitted the large torque reaction dampers, reduced the poundage of the front check dampers to 100 lbs max, and 90 lbs min. We have also had the cylinder head off and fitted the six 3.1/4% Nickel Steel Inez valves, and ground in the exhaust valves, and generally cleaned the head up. There will not be much time for testing prior to the Gp. having the car, but we have endeavoured to put it in as good a condition as possible. The car will be leaving here Tuesday.
